Founded in 2020 by Melisa Yukselir, The Blanket Project came to be as she was spending her Covid lockdown looking for projects and knitting became a big part of her life. Working with rescues, Melisa noticed that blankets are a common thing that every single rescue had on their Amazon wish list and knew that something could be done to reduce this cost to them. Knitting blankets, collecting used blankets, sheets towels and fleece blankets is just one way that she is able to give back.
At the Blanket Project we want to make sure that animals in shelters and rescues have a comfortable place to lay their head while they wait for their forever home. Our goal is to make that transition easier on them. We accept donations of gently used, new, or handmade blankets that we ship to rescues and shelters primarily throughout Ontario.
Shelters and rescues go through blankets at lightning speed and are always in need of clean fabrics to swaddle newborn kittens or puppies, as a soft layer in a crate or cubbie, or as a layer in their kennel to cozy up to. These blankets provide a comfortable bed year-round, not just when the weather is colder.
Animals awaiting adoption may not have much to call their own, but ensuring that they have a comfortable place to lay their heads is just as impactful to them as a comfortable bed is to us.
We’re sure that you also wish you could adopt every animal in the shelter. Donating blankets is a small but meaningful way to show your love and support those animals without filling your house with pets.
Whether you knit, crochet, or sew, we’re looking for blanket projects that you come up with to create blankets for fur babies. Ideal sizes are 18x18 for neonatal kittens and other small animals, or 18x24 for regular sized cats and small dogs. Larger blankets are always needed as well and we’ll find the suitable animal to cozy up in it!
Blankets for pets would make the perfect project for scouts/girl guides groups (get that sewing badge!), bible study, retirement home or any charitable or social group. Gather your pals and get crafting!
We also accept donations of newly purchased or gently used blankets that you may have around your home. We’re happy to help arrange delivery to an organization in need.
